Background
WEI was established in 1990 through an agreement with Unilever PLC that concluded in the acquisition of the assets, intellectual properties and patents developed by the Unilever Research Advanced Technology Center. The Advanced Technology Center was created by Chesebrough-Ponds in 1977, and was the primary source for manufacturing automation technology throughout the Chesebrough family of companies until the Unilever acquisition of Chesebrough-Ponds. The founders of WEI were also the founders of the Advanced Technology Center. Some of the staff at WEI pioneered the use of machine vision in manufacturing, process controls integrated with robotics and in-plant networking.
